We have had a blast for the last eight years formulating and manufacturing products to pamper you from head to toe! Some of you have been with us since the beginning when we were making soap in 1 or 2 pound batches. Some of you have discovered us only recently. All of you are equally valued.

We have been very fortunate to enjoy tremendous growth in the last several years. But in all things there is a natural ebb and flow, and business is no different. It is time for Flower Peddler to change with the seasons.

On September 1st we closed our Ashland, Virginia manufacturing location. We are now in the process of discontinuing all our product lines except for our handmade soap. This was not a decision we arrived at lightly as we know many of you have come to depend upon our products. All our current products are listed on the website and are available for order online but are limited to on-hand inventory. Once a product has sold out, it will be removed from the site. Our website will be closed temporarily at the end of the month so we can revamp and spruce up a bit. We will relaunch on October 1st with some brand new soaps and a fresh look.

Just as each season brings a fresh start, so does this opportunity for us. We are excited about getting back to basics and the chance to continue to offer you some of the most luxurious soaps on the market. We extend a huge heartfelt thank you to all of our extraordinary customers. We could not have made this journey without you!

Girls Night Out to Benefit Autism Speaks

I generally do not make personal posts on this blog, however, I want to share with you an event I will be participating in on Thursday, September 17th. It is Richmond's first Girls Night Out! event to benefit Autism Speaks. Autism Speaks is an organization dedicated to funding global biomedical research into the causes, prevention, treatments, and cure for autism; to raising public awareness about autism and its effects on individuals, families, and society; and to bringing hope to all who deal with the hardships of this disorder.

So, what's the personal part of this post? I have a child with autism. We deal with this order every day, 24/7. I am proud to participate in this event and hope that if you are in the Richmond, VA area you will come out to support this fundraiser. In Honor of Father's Day: Skincare for Men

Do men really need to worry about skincare?

Absolutely! For many men, skincare is probably an afterthought. However, with the growing availability and acceptance of facial care products designed for men, there really is no excuse for a guy to limit his skincare regimen to just shaving. Daily facial care is just as important for you men as it is for women. After all, doesn't everyone want to maintain a youthful, healthy glow and protect our skin from premature aging? Many of you guys put a lot of effort into your diet and fitness routines, but forget that the first thing someone notices about you is your face, not your abs.

Skincare does not have to be a complicated, drawn-out process. And we're going to make it easy for you. Good facial care for men consists of the same elements as it does for women: cleansing, moisturizing, and protecting. Guys, you actually have an advantage over women when it comes to maintaining youthful skin longer. A man's skin is about 20% thicker than a woman's. It is typically firmer because it is richer in collagen and elastin. This makes you less prone to wrinkling, and more resistant than a woman's skin to sun and other enviromental factors. With these advantages, however, comes skin more active with sebaceous glands, in other words, more oily with larger pores. And also, because of shaving, your skin tends towards dehydration more quickly.

So where do you start? You start with the basics - cleansing. Daily washing keeps the pores unclogged which can prevent a variety of common skin problems including blemishes and ingrown hairs. Our Cleansed Daily Aloe Facial Cleanser will get you started.You can also use one of our complexion bars including Citrusy Chamomile or Creamy Calendula .

What's next? Apply a moisturizer. Because the action of daily shaving can be harsh and drying to your skin, replenishing your skin's moisture balance is very important. Be careful in the shaving product selections you make avoiding those with alcohol and menthol which can be irritating. Of course, we highly recommend Flower Peddler Shaving Soaps! We suggest you follow up with Lubed, our daily facial moisturizer without an oily feel. Our Aftershave Balm also makes an excellent skin conditioner.

Exfoliation is also a great way to remove any debris that may be blocking your pores and dulling your complexion. We suggest you do this once or twice per week using our Buffed . You may find you actually get a closer shave following a scrub. Exfoliation can also significantly brighten the appearance of your skin and allow other skincare products to work more effectively.

Deep cleansing once a week with our Glacial Facial Clay Mask will tone, revitalize, and remove impurities and excess oils from the skin while improving its texture and appearance.

Perhaps the easiest way to maintain healthy skin, however, begins with diet. Proper nutrition with adequate amounts of vitamins, minerals, and proteins, and especially water help sustain our body's first line of defense against the elements. Taking multi-vitamins rich in anti-oxidants, reducing caffeine and alcohol intake, and limiting exposure to the sun are all ways you can help support healthy skin. Drink plenty of water (6 - 8 glasses per day) to help preserve skin's elasticity and prevent dehydration. Avoid smoking. And use sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher! Sun damage and poor nutrition are the surest ways to speed up the aging process.

Skincare for men really does not differ from that required for women. Cleansing and moisturizing are key. Remember guys, proper skincare does not have to involve large amounts of time or your girlfriend's bath products; only a few minutes a day with products designed for you, will have your skin looking its best.

Name a Soap Contest!

It's no secret we like to have fun with the names of our soaps. Why be "Orange & Patchouli Soap" when you can be "Sterno Bum?" Right? We get the inspiration for our soap names from a variety of places like movies, songs,and cartoons but also from the suggestions of our customers.

So we're holding our third (who knows, it might become an annual thing) "Name the Soap Contest." If you have an awesome suggestion for a soap name leave us a comment on our blog. Make sure you include your contact information in case your suggestion wins. Make as many suggestions as you like, but all must be entered as a comment to this blog. Be creative, but keep it clean please; this is a family website. :) We'll round up our five favorite suggestions and post a poll on our blog for a vote. The winner not only gets the honor of naming a soap for our 2009 line but will also receive 3 bars of their namesake soap after it goes into production next year.

We'll take suggestions up through September 15th and then post the poll on our blog on September 22nd. Poll will end on October 1st. The winner will be the top vote-getter and will be announced on our website October 2nd.

Come out and see us this Saturday at the U of R Stadium for Family Fest!

The Richmond Kickers are pleased to host the first annual FAMILY FEST, presented by Ukrop’s, on Saturday, August 9th, beginning at 4:00 p.m. at the University of Richmond Stadium (just off the Downtown Expressway). The Festival caps off the Kickers 15th anniversary season and will feature food, live music, activities for kids and fun for the whole family!

WHEN: Saturday, August 9th 2008, Gates open at 4:00 pm

WHERE: University of Richmond Stadium (a few blocks from Carytown or just off the Downtown Expressway)

WHAT: The festival will feature live music by local musicians, food, arts and crafts, an interactive fun zone, video games, face-painting, a petting zoo, mascots and prizes. In addition, everyone in attendance will be invited to participate in small-sided soccer games, juggle-a-thons and soccer drills, to be held on the field at the stadium, throughout the day.

PRO SOCCER: The Richmond Kickers pro soccer game highlights the event as the Kickers host Crystal Palace Baltimore at 7:00 pm in the regular season finale.

TICKETS: Bring the whole family before 6:00 pm and purchase a $5.00 ticket that allows admission for the whole group.

Many of the new regulations and proposed fees, which could add up to approximately $12,000 per year, would be unfairly burdensome for most small companies. If you are a Flower Peddler customer or if you purchase from any other of the thousands of small cosmetic companies out there, you may find that if this legislation goes through, your remaining choices will only be big box businesses. Gone will be the creativity, variety, and price ranges that small, independent manufacturers bring to the market.

While we agree with the importance of regulating the cosmetics industry to ensure the safety of consumers and are proud to say that Flower Peddler is compliant with the Good Manufacturing Practices outlined by the FDA, it appears the proposal does not address methods for increasing enforcement of federal laws nor does it offer consumers any more protection than the system that is currently in place. What the Globalization Act of 2008 will really do is lay the ground work for the monopolization of the marketplace by big corporations by proposing manufacturing practices and fees that small companies could not possibly comply with and remain in business.

Rivafest is a tradition here in Central Virginia that many families whether they live here or have moved out of the area flock to attend each and every year. It is sponsored by the Tappahannock-Essex County Chamber of Commerce. It's a fun community festival that is held in downtown Tappahannock Prince Street. The ever popular Fireman's Parade will open RivahFest on Friday evening at 7 p.m. with a judged parade through downtown, starting on Water Lane and turning on Prince Street. The Miss Flame contest open to young ladies from Essex and the surrounding counties will be staged at St. Margaret's Stage 2 on Saturday morning at 11 a.m.

Back by popular demand this year are a huge Arts, Crafts and Antiques section, Children’s Activities area, an expanded Farmer’s Market and the “Treasures of Tappahannock” historic walking tour. Two Entertainment Stages will feature a wide variety of performers, headlined by the legendary musical style of Steve Bassett, Ammon Tharpe with the Mystic Soul Bubbas and supported by one of Richmond, Virginia's favorite hometown hitters Janet Martin Band.

We'll be there bright and early. Look for our cheerful faces and great smelling soaps in the Farmer's Market area!

A personal request from the Head Flower Girl

Consider for a moment a public scene where a parent is struggling with a screaming, tantruming, and inconsolable child. It would appear fairly typical if the child was two. Those of you with children would nod knowingly and probably not give it a second thought. Those without children may say a little prayer of thanks.

Now consider the same scene where the child is twelve years old. What would be your first reaction upon seeing a kicking, screaming adolescent? Do you assume the child is a brat and the parent is completely inept? Do you make public comments such as "he just needs a good spanking" or further add to the parent and child's humiliation with other cruel comments or actions like demanding loudly that the restaurant manager seat you elsewhere "because of the noise", or request a store manager call the police? I ask you to stop for a moment and consider that what you may be witnessing is a child having an autism meltdown. Rather than judging, offer the parent your assistance. Hold their place in line, or watch their shopping cart for them. Help the parent get the situation under control by allowing them the opportunity to concentrate on their child. Offer a tissue and a smile, help pick up the mess after the storm has passed. Just show a little compassion. Not all disabilities are obvious at first glance, but all those with disabilities deserve a little respect.

We're back! Moving took a bit longer than expected (doesn't it always), but we're back up and running. Our order turn around time will be a couple days longer than usual as we work through orders placed during our closure. This is just temporary though, we promise.

For other news...

Since the weather has cooled off a bit we have resumed shipping for some of our more temperature-sensitive items such as our uber-popular butters and melts. You'll see them available for order on the website now.

We're also putting the finishing touches on our holiday and winter product line. We're super excited about this year's line as we think it's our best yet.

We're furiously restocking our soap lines including our special seasonal varieties. We'll announce release dates shortly.

We have lots of other announcements we'll save for another post. Time for us to get back to work and get your orders out. If you live or work in the Ashland. Virginia area, we'd love for you to stop by and see us. Just give us a ring to make an appointment.

Flower Peddler is moving!

We've been bursting at the seams for quite a while, and the time has finally come for us to move. Beginning September 29th Flower Peddler offices will be closed in order to relocate our operations to a new production facility. The website will remain open to accept orders during our move. We will be checking messages and email but please allow us some additional time to respond. All orders placed during our closure will be processed in the order in which they were received beginning October 9th. We'll be reopening then with new products, a couple new faces, and a grand kick-off sale. We'll try to post pictures here of our adventure. Wish us luck!
